Olympic champion Vladimir Smirnov was a student at the Kazakh Institute of Physical Culture in 1981-1986. During his sports career, he took part in four Olympics and achieved outstanding results.
A significant event in the life of the academy and the department of winter and complex technical sports in 2012 was the opening of the Ski Academy of Olympic champion V.M. Smirnova.
The department has great opportunities for training undergraduates. Among them were excellent students, masters of sports of international class, world champion in arm wrestling V. Bondik, freestylers D. Rybalova, champion of the 2011 World Winter Universiade, D. Reikherd, champion of the 2013 World Winter Universiade. and 2017 multiple winner of the World Cup stages, A. Raikova champion of the World Winter Universiade 2015, 2017. A. Malinovskaya, champion of the XXVII World Summer Universiade 2013 in shooting. D. Rybalova, V. Lanchakova became holders of diplomas and cash prizes from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2013, Yu. Galysheva was recognized as the best athlete of the year at the academy, and in 2017 she became the silver medalist of the freestyle world championship, and in 2018 she took 3rd place at the Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in a bitter struggle. In 2015, P. Kolmakov won a gold medal in freestyle moguls at the XXVII World Winter Universiade in Granada and was recognized as the best athlete of the year at the academy. In 2017, students and undergraduates of the department successfully performed at the 28th World Winter Universiade in Almaty. Of the 36 medals, 24 were won by KazAST students. At the VIII Winter Asian Games 2017, held in Sapporo (Japan), KazAST students won 12 medals of various denominations.
At the XXIII Winter Olympic Games 2018, held in Pyeongchang (South Korea), 11 students participated: Reikherd Dmitry, Galysheva Yulia, Kolmakov Pavel, Amrenova Ayaulym, Belchenko Elizaveta, Shevchenko Anna, Tkachenko Sergey, Azhgaliev Abzal.
